Congressman Chaka Fattah up for reelection

Chaka Fattah is a Democratic congressman running for his 10th term in the U.S. House of Representatives.  He was born in Philadelphia and still resides in the same city.  He earned a Masters degree in Governmental Administration from the University of Pennsylvania in 1986.

Fattah’s political career began in the 1970’s when he started out as a member of the Pennsylvania State Board of Education.  Then in 1978, he ran for Philadelphia City Commissioner but was not elected.    In 1982, he was elected to be a Representative for the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, and in 1988, he was elected to the state Senate.    Fattah was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1994.

In this election, Fattah’s campaign has raised $438,343.34 and he has spent $346,389.94, according to votesmart.org.

Congressman Fattah’s stance on certain issues have been gathered based on the 2012 political courage test that Project Vote Smart conducted.  Fattah is pro-choice since he has supported organizations like Planned Parenthood.  He does not support the elimination of federal estate tax but supports using government funds in an effort to stimulate and improve the economy.  He doesn’t believe that criminals should receive capital punishment.  Fattah also supports federal education standards and testing requirements for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.  He supports restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns and environmental regulations aimed at reducing the effects of climate change. He is also in favor of a publicly-administered health insurance option and the United States’ military action against Afghanistan.  In addition, he believes in marriage for heterosexual and homosexual couples.  Chaka Fattah was named one of the fifty most promising leaders in the country by Time Magazine.
